Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album is a return to a classic sextet format, and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloned on previous recordings.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live performance that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album just a few months after and then embarked on a tour around the world to support the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released as a double-album titled Then And Now in 2001. It was the band's first album without a single song titled "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which limited his singing ability.
